"Then there's the Vu Quang ox. Unknown to science, the 3-foot tall creature had existed only as a myth until remains of the animal were found in 1992 in Vietnam's primeval Vu Quang Nature Reserve. The tiny ox was the first new species of large mammal discovered since a forest giraffe, the okapi, was captured in modern Zaire in 1906. A live Vu Quang ox calf was captured in 1994, proof that even large animals could evade detection in the remotest corners of our 'global village.'"
